Based on the Carnegie Mellon Prep School philosophy, The Beginning Piano Program is a multi-semester
program for young children providing comprehensive instruction, a natural approach to piano, fluency in reading
and attention to musical detail. Students receive a 30-minute group class and a 30-minute private lesson weekly.
Upon completion, students transition into weekly private lessons.
An initial meeting is required before enrolling.

What is the benefit of including a Group Class and Private Lesson?

Learning music is similar to learning a foreign language and for young children, this can be a
large task. Group classes focus on introducing concepts in a fun, interactive setting. Since every
child has musical needs that develop differently, private lessons are also an integral part of this
program and where each child is given the personal attention necessary to grow as individuals.

Do we need a piano at the first lesson?

Yes! It is imperative that students have a piano beginning with the first lesson. While purchasing
a piano is an investment, it is crucial to have a suitable instrument for your child to be successful.
Please let us know if we may assist you in purchasing a new or used piano.

Private Piano Lessons
Beginning ● Intermediate ● Advanced
Private piano lessons provide a solid foundation in note-
reading, technique and musicianship. Students enrolled in
private lessons may also take advantage of workshops,
group classes and performance opportunities offered
throughout the year. All special events are included in the
cost of tuition.

The school also offers a variety of
Enrichment Classes
each semester covering a wide range of topics. Private
lesson students may enroll in two Enrichment Classes per
semester for no additional class fees.

When do you begin private piano instruction?

Traditional piano lessons begin at age 6 years. Students who
have previous experience are always welcome, and we make
every attempt to create a smooth transition.

Instrument requirements

Student enrolled in lessons must have an adequate instrument
for daily practice. Piano students should have an acoustic
piano. Please contact the school for additional information.
